The Tenerife Island Council is set to convene a joint committee among public transport firms to establish various measures aimed at enhancing the safety of both drivers and passengers across the island. This was announced by the president, Rosa Dávila, during a press conference.

“Public transport in Tenerife is secure,” stated Dávila, who went on to mention that “if you were to comprehend how often we request assistance from the police, the figure is minuscule, at 0.006%. Nonetheless, we have a steadfast and serious commitment to ensuring the safety of bus and tram passengers and drivers.”

She highlighted that “all buses, stops and trams in Tenerife” are equipped with surveillance cameras that are connected in real-time, which have proven useful in clarifying incidents occurring in public transport when needed by the National Police.

The island president referred to a recent altercation on the Tenerife Tram that resulted in the arrest of three individuals who attacked another person with a knife “thanks to the cooperation between the Cabildo and the Tenerife Metropolitan Police,” which offered all its camera resources and capabilities.

“The enhancement in capacity, both in terms of buses and the number of passengers, has not resulted in any rise in incidents (…) and we will provide details on this range of measures, mutually agreed upon with our staff, to elevate the quality of service and ensure that passengers and drivers feel more secure,” she remarked.
