Regularly, and now expanding across other Islands through collaborations with various groups dedicated to history and the preservation of Canarian heritage, members of the Imastanen social archaeology collective undertake expeditions and uncover new infractions against the Guanche heritage which they bring to the notice of the Tenerife Heritage department. This was recently demonstrated with “a new violation” in Guía de Isora, where an engraving has been defaced by graffiti, which adds to the “complete neglect” of a Guanche settlement consisting of several hut structures in this same area situated in the southwest of the Island.
In relation to this second issue, the group led by Sixto García underscores that “this is a location with a significant amount of invasive plants, particularly reed and cactus, which are hindering the preservation of the site—a duty that falls on local authorities, as stated in the Heritage Law.”
They argue that, since both are elements that lack protection, activities such as the use of motor vehicles nearby “are jeopardising these cultural manifestations”. Consequently, they urge the authorities to “take charge of their responsibilities in heritage matters, as well as to educate younger generations and re-educate adults. It is imperative for the administration to promote and enhance the legacy of our ancestors among the public, since, as seen with rallies, actions are occurring in an open and delicate environment, where the only way to ensure safe development and minimal environmental impact is through appropriate oversight, upkeep and safeguarding” of these inherited facets from the Guanches.
As always, the group has communicated these incidents to the Heritage Department of the Cabildo de Tenerife. In regard to the engraving, they state that “it is a very noteworthy manifestation from our perspective,” while cautioning that movements of stones have been noted “which may have disrupted the ecological balance of the surroundings.”
“In light of the damage and this latest finding, Imastanen calls upon the authorities to adopt a proactive stance in the protection and enhancement of heritage, and to implement necessary measures to ensure that sports and other activities are conducted sustainably, safeguarding our heritage and environment for posterity,” they express to this publication.
