SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 16 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government Council has sanctioned the decree recognising the Ateneo de La Laguna Association as being of public interest to the Canary Islands, following a proposal from the Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, Justice and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto. This recognition is based on the association’s objectives which aim to advance the general welfare of the autonomous community, as well as the advantages that the Association’s endeavours provide to Canarian society.

The Ateneo de La Laguna features among its social objectives the promotion and enhancement of culture across all forms and expressions, allowing it to advocate for both public and private initiatives while encouraging public discourse and continual dialogue on matters related to scientific, artistic, and humanistic domains, along with any other human endeavour that is linked, directly or indirectly, to its aims. The association is committed to unwavering, selfless dedication, devoid of ideological attachments, and serves the Canary Islands with a philosophy of respect, independence, and tolerance.

Submitted reports reveal that 48 cultural events were conducted in 2022 and a total of 80 in 2023. These include art exhibitions, music and performing arts presentations, literary and theatrical events, film screenings, as well as activities centred around the humanities and sciences, along with an art festival.

Registered since 1966, the Ateneo de La Laguna Association is listed in the Registry of Associations of the Canary Islands under number G1/S1/11483-66/TF, with the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands as its territorial area of operation. It lodged its application for the declaration of public interest on March 7, 2024.

Similar to other public interest declarations in the Canary Islands, it has been verified that its activities are not limited solely to its members; that representatives who receive compensation do not utilise public funding, and they possess sufficient material and personal resources to ensure adherence to the aims defined in their statutes. Additionally, the association has shown that it has been effectively operational and actively engaged in activities continuously for at least two years preceding the application submission.
