His Holiness Pope Francis has, on Monday, accepted the resignation of Monsignor Bernardo Álvarez, who has served as Bishop of Tenerife since 2005, as reported by the Spanish Episcopal Conference.
Born on 29 July 1949 in Breña Alta (La Palma), Bernardo Álvarez began studying to become a Technical Architect in La Laguna in 1967, a course he later discontinued to enrol in the Diocesan Seminary of Tenerife in October 1969. He was ordained as a priest on 16 July 1976.
He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from the Faculty of Theology of Northern Spain, Burgos campus (1987), followed by a qualification in Dogmatic Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome (1994).
He was appointed as Bishop of Tenerife on 29 June 2005 and received episcopal ordination on 4 September of the same year at the Cathedral of La Laguna. On this date, he also officially took possession of the Diocese of Nivariense.
Within the Spanish Episcopal Conference, he is a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Clergy and Seminaries.
