The CEST asks to expand the port of Los Cristianos

The Circle of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of the South of Tenerife (CEST) has asked the public administrations of the Canary Islands and the State to reconsider the possibility of recovering the preliminary project proposed in the first decade of 2000 to expand the port of Los Cristianos with a second dock that would alleviate the maritime and land collapse that it currently suffers.

In a statement, the CEST added that the port of Los Cristianos is “the largest” in terms of inter-island traffic but it is becoming too small, which hurts the green islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

“This work, together with the creation of an urban planning rethinking plan on land, could be the fastest way to overcome the collapse in Los Cristianos”, has underlined the president of the Circle, Roberto Ucelay.

And although they consider that the construction of the port of Fonsalía (Guía de Isora, Tenerife) continues to be the “most appropriate” solution, they believe that it is necessary to undertake other alternative actions beforehand to respond to the problem in the medium term.

“The State has not invested in the adaptation and improvement of the port facilities of Los Cristianos for years, despite the importance they have to guarantee the social and economic cohesion of the Canary Islands and specifically of the islands that make up the western province.”

They insist that this expansion of the port of Los Cristianos would be a “provisional solution” until the port of Fonsalía is enabled, whose operation would allow to reduce the routes between islands and their cost.

In addition, they recall that the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife does not enjoy a sufficient nautical sports offer to international and national demand, which produces a comparative offense with respect to other national territories.
