The Adeje City Council, following the lead of other towns in Tenerife such as Santa Cruz, has initiated a penalty campaign aimed at tackling the illegal disposal of waste on public streets, particularly concerning construction debris and the pruning of private gardens.
The fines imposed range from €3,000 to €60,000, contingent upon the severity of the violation and the type of materials discarded.
This initiative, coordinated by various municipal departments including Land Planning, Public Works and Services, alongside Citizen Security, aims not only to enforce fines but also to deter the accumulation of rubble and waste in sensitive areas. Alongside local police monitoring, efforts to clean up the impacted locales have been stepped up to reduce environmental damage.
In recent months, the council has observed an uptick in illegal dumping near the recycling centre, along the TF-47 road, and within the industrial districts of Adeje.
Firms engaged in construction work or similar activities have primarily been responsible for these illegal disposals, contravening existing regulations in the Canary Islands.
A recent incident involved a company apprehended by local law enforcement whilst discarding waste electrical materials adjacent to the recycling centre, which was closed at that time. While the infraction was deemed minor, the company faced a €3,000 fine. Had hazardous materials been involved, the penalty could have escalated to €60,000.
