SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 11 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Vice President and Councillor for Tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, acknowledged on Wednesday that establishing a moratorium on holiday lets – as requested by the Fecai – would be “rather ineffective,” especially as a new legislative proposal is soon to be presented in Parliament.

During a press conference discussing the agreements of the Government Council, he emphasised that the new regulation suggested by the Canary Islands Government “delegates the authority to approve new holiday accommodations to the municipalities’ planning,” effectively creating a type of moratorium which implies that “until municipal planning is amended and adapted, no further housing can be authorised.”

Nevertheless, he appreciated the “good intentions” of the councils concerning “the desire to curb the rise in offerings,” highlighting that “it is an objective fact” corroborated in the Council that must be addressed in the upcoming months.
