SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the area of Management of the Natural Environment and Security, has advised against the population to go to the Teide National Park (PNT) from this Tuesday until August 16 for the sighting of the well-known tears of San Lorenzo or Perseidas, due to the level 4 health alert for Covid-19, to which we add the forecasts of high temperatures for the next few days on the island’s summits.
In this regard, the island councilor for Natural Environment and Security, Isabel García, has indicated that due to the level 4 alert on the island, the Cabildo “advises against visiting the Teide National Park, anticipating that, as in other years, the influx of people it is excessive in this protected space during the sighting of the meteor shower “.
For this reason, it has advanced that dissuasive measures will be established, such as the special activation of State Security Forces and Bodies that will be in charge of ensuring correct compliance with the access rules in this protected space and that will be made public this Wednesday , as reported by the insular institution in a press release.
García acknowledges that the sighting of this meteor shower from the National Park “is already a traditional activity in summer, however, the health situation on the island does not advise that people be allowed to gather in the Park.”
Due to this, this Wednesday there will be a coordination meeting between the National Park office, the Cabildo Civil Protection Service, the municipalities with territory in the Park, in addition to the State Security Forces and Corps, in addition to the Government of Canary Islands to establish the precautionary measures derived from the current pandemic situation and in the “most respectful way possible with a highly sensitive environment” such as Mount Teide.
He also recalled that this shower of stars coincides with the festivities of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands, for which he has requested “not to make a pilgrimage through the protected areas also due to level 4 and the meteorological predictions that point to several nights of extreme heat”.
