Revamping Arona: Turespaña’s Vision for a New Tourism Model

The Pyramid of Congress Palace Arona will host the IV Turespaña Convention from October 1 to 3, organised by Turespaña in conjunction with the Tourism of Tenerife. The event will be inaugurated and concluded by the Secretary of State for Tourism and President of Turespaña, Rosario Sánchez, who will also take part in a panel discussion with experts regarding the strategic transformation of the Spanish tourism model. Additionally, the Tourism adviser of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jessica de León; the President of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila; the Mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes; and the General Director of Turespaña, Miguel Sanz, will also feature in the proceedings.

This edition bears the motto “Everything changes again: emerging technologies for a new tourism model” and will concentrate on the digitalisation of the sector along with the application of technology to innovate products and enhance management models, ensuring effective sustainability.

The Vice President and Tourism Minister of the Town Hall, Lope Afonso, emphasises that the convention “will showcase to the world the significance of the tourist destination Tenerife, illustrating how dynamic our capabilities and offerings are.” This will be accomplished “in conjunction with discussions on the significant challenges facing the industry globally, such as digitalisation, sustainability, and establishing tourism as a competitive sector that fosters well-being and integrates into the local landscape. Tenerife stands as a reference point for both national and international tourism.” Afonso reiterates that “the island is a premier tourist destination committed to sustainability, generating wealth and employment within the region. It will be a pivotal event for the national tourism sector, thoroughly aligned with the only effective model of governance through public-private collaboration.”

The CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, expressed that “it is a privilege for Tenerife” to be the host for this “meeting and collaboration platform for Spanish tourist destinations and industry enterprises, enabling us to connect, share insights and best practices, and most importantly, tackle new collective challenges.” Melwani notes that the conference theme on digitalisation “is vital, along with new technologies and optimal data management which allows destinations to plan and optimise resources while customising offerings and enhancing operational efficiency, always aiming to become a more sustainable destination.”

The convention will analyse the current status and future prospects of the industry, delving into the digitalisation of the tourism sector and its application in creating new products and experiences for visitors, as well as improving management frameworks for destinations and businesses facilitating the transition to a more sustainable and competitive model.

Turespaña will present the latest statistics and market trends in its primary operational areas, particularly focusing on Asia, in addition to outlining its work initiatives and projects for the upcoming year. Notably, an innovative pilot project for a conversational virtual assistant on its Spain.info portal will be highlighted.
