The Casa del Vino, in El Sauzal, hosted last night the traditional act of the uncorking of the new vintage of wines of the island, which included the delivery of the San Andrés 2021 Prize to the Tenerife winemaker Carmen Gloria Ferrera, by the president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Pedro Martín (PSOE). The insular leader highlighted the trajectory of this viticulturist in a fundamentally masculine field, which has led all her life linked to the world of wine, owner of Bodega Ferrera, and which operates under the protected designations of origin Valle de Güímar and Islas Canary Islands
Martín made reference to the importance that the primary sector has for the island, not only for the sustaining economic activity and employment related to the work of the land, livestock and the sea, but also “to preserve the landscape, culture and traditions.”
The Tenerife president highlighted the work being done by the Insular Corporation to promote the consumption of local or kilometer zero products, both among the island’s population and among tourists. He pointed out the recent display at the San Sebastián Gastronomika international congress and other events such as Madrid Fusión or the Gourmets Hall, where products from the island’s countryside and sea, such as wines, honeys, cheeses or meats, have been exhibited before professionals of the world gastronomy.
The insular councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, recalled that, historically, on the night of the eve of San Andrés in Tenerife new wine is tasted, the wineries are opened and together with the chestnuts and local traditions, such as running the pots and tables, make this night a special party. Taking advantage of this event, the Cabildo has brought together agents involved in the sector at the Casa del Vino to highlight the relevance of the six denominations of origin of the island.
Carmen Gloria Ferrera, owner of Bodega Ferrera, was born in Arafo, in 1952, into a family of farmers with three generations dedicated to the vineyard and wine. With Bodega Ferrera, the Tenerife winemaker has harvested numerous awards and recognitions in national and international competitions. In addition, she has been one of the founding members of the Cumbres de Abona Cooperative, as well as of the SAT Viticultores del Valle de Güímar, registered in the Regulatory Council of the DO Valle de Güímar since its creation in 1994. She has also chaired the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin Valle de Güímar.
The award was presented in a theatrical ceremony in which its participants also highlighted the importance of viticulture for the island’s economy and culture, and where the quality and innovative character of Tenerife wines were emphasized. The Tenerife Council celebrates these awards since 1996.
Last night’s act will be complemented today with the XI Canarian Wine Technical Conference, organized by the Technical Service for Agrifood Quality and Valorisation. The appointment will also be at the Casa del Vino.
