SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29 Aug (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tenerife Island Council has initiated efforts to enhance and renovate the Sendero del Mar, alongside developing a new pathway linking the hamlet of El Socorro to Puertito de Güímar, adjacent to the Malpaís Special Nature Reserve.

These initiatives are part of the projects aimed at upgrading the Island Network of Trails of the Cabildo for the period spanning 2022-2025, which are being executed by the public enterprise Gesplan, with a total investment of approximately 1.8 million euros.

The Minister for Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, along with the local mayor, Gustavo Pérez, recently inspected the trail accompanied by the island directors of Environment and Security and Emergencies, Pedro Millán and Iván Martín, respectively.

The improvements are being made along a 3.7-kilometre stretch that connects Puertito de Güímar with El Socorro, traversing the coastline near Archaco Mountain, and is one of six routes linked to the Malpaís Reserve.

In this context, Blanca Pérez notes in a statement that the Puertito-El Socorro route is one of the six pathways permitted within the Malpaís de Güímar Special Nature Reserve, which totals around 14 kilometres.

“We are focusing on the section that borders Archaco Mountain and have devised a new route to make it permanent, which will mitigate the effects of the sea during high tides,” she explains.

Pérez outlines that the project involves clearing the vicinity, enhancing interpretive signage, renewing the entry and exit markers of the Protected Natural Area, and installing precautionary signs to protect the area’s natural resources.

“The path is undergoing refurbishment, as it has fallen into disrepair; stones and gullies are being removed, and improvements have been made to the steps and railings,” elaborates the Minister for Environment, Sustainability, Safety and Emergencies.

The mayor of Güímar, Gustavo Pérez, asserts that the coastal pathway connecting Puertito and El Socorro is a “remarkable trail” offering numerous resources to Tenerife.

“It is a 4-kilometre route along the coast, and if one gazes towards the upper region, the Malpaís de Güímar Special Nature Reserve is adjacent to Archaco Mountain, marking a significant location within Güímar municipality. We are committed to preserving it, and the Council has undertaken efforts to renovate and even open new areas for visitors to relish a unique experience on the island,” he elaborates.
