The Canaries are not called “lucky islands” just because Greek mythology used to do so, but also because it is one of the autonomous communities most graced by the fate of the long-awaited Christmas Fat. This first grand prize of the Christmas lottery has sailed to the islands uncorking bottles of champagne up to 42 times since the millionaire sweepstakes historically began, two centuries ago. There are even three Canarian municipalities crowned as the luckiest: San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Telde in Gran Canaria and Puerto de La Cruz in Tenerife.

Every December 22nd the Extraordinary Christmas Giveaway, and since his luck began in the year 1978, Canarias has been decorated as one of the places in Spain where the lottery jackpot is distributed the most. The State Lottery and Gambling Society of the State (SELAE) ensures that each person spends an average of 66 euros in the Christmas stone, an investment that is unparalleled if it is made in an autonomous community like the Canary Islands, where the long-awaited award has been played so many times.

Telde (Gran Canaria) was the first municipality that was bathed with the gold of the draw in 1978, when 15,640 was sung. Fortune smiled again at the Canary Islands in the 20th century, this time four years later, in 1982 when 21,515 fell in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Later in 2001 It was the city of Santa Cruz de La Palma that opened its doors to El Gordo, as did Garachico (Tenerife) in 2010.

Two years later, the hype released the 76.058 and took it to Telde (Gran Canaria), Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura), Arrecife (Lanzarote), and Tenerife in the towns of Los Realejos, Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz . San Bartolomé (Lanzarote) was doubly filled with joy over the years 2014 and 2017.

On 2007 the Tenerife administration of Puerto de la Cruz would obtain the winning number but the town did not celebrate the event since no one had acquired the winning ticket.

Along with the two of the blessed Canarian places in Gran Canaria (Telde and San Bartolomé de Tirajana) is the Tenerife town of Granadilla de Abona, being the third most surfed by luck of the islands. They are followed by a large number of towns: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Puerto del Rosario, Arrecife, Los Realejos, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Puerto de la Cruz, Garachico, Arucas, Teror, Gáldar, Santa María de Guía, Firgas, Santa Lucia de Tirajana, Agüimes, Yaiza, Antigua and Pájara.
