The Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital (Tenerife) has moved the Neurology, Endocrinology and Radiotherapy Oncology department to the second floor of the main building. This relocation aims to enhance proximity to the central services necessary for the prompt diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients.
As part of this restructuring, the Urology and Ophthalmology admission units have been shifted to the sixth floor of the facility.
This repositioning enables the Neurology department to occupy the same level as the Emergency, Radiology, and Interventional Radiology services, alongside the hyperacute stroke treatment area, all of which play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment procedures, according to a statement from the Department of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands.
The intention behind this initiative is to expedite patient care when the ‘Stroke Code’ is activated within the Neurology department.
Given that this condition is time-sensitive, the highest priority is assigned to the transfer and execution of tests within the shortest timeframe possible, facilitating quicker recanalisation treatment, thereby enhancing prognosis and minimising complications, highlights the Ministry.
The ward is equipped with 28 beds for the three departments, of which six are specifically designated for stroke patients, offering constant monitoring and video surveillance.
Annually, this unit treats over 250 individuals affected by this condition.
The Stroke Unit has been operational for 23 years and comprises a multidisciplinary team that works closely with specialists from Neurology, Neuroradiology, Interventional Radiology, Intensive Medicine, and Vascular Surgery.
Additionally, nursing personnel provide specialised care to patients throughout the phases of diagnosis, monitoring, and recovery.
Since 2015, the unit has collaborated with the European Angels Initiative to equip professionals with the latest advanced techniques in Code Stroke management, conducting various simulations throughout the year at the different centres affiliated with the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.
