The Tenerife Island Council, via Balsas de Tenerife (Balten), will allocate 2,456,301 euros towards the creation of a floating photovoltaic plant at the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir, located in the municipality of Arona.
It is anticipated that the installation of solar panels at the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir will supply energy to 243 households and prevent the release of approximately 225 tonnes of CO2 annually, as stated by the island authority.
The Tenerife Island Council plans to invest a total of 15 million euros in the initial phase of the Decarbonisation Plan for the Tenerife Irrigation Water System, managed by the public entity Balten, which provides water for agricultural use across Tenerife.
This initiative is funded both by the Cabildo itself and the European Union, aiming for 86.6% of the energy consumed by Balten to be sourced from renewable origins, thereby preventing the emission of 8,850.74 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year.
The Vice President of Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, emphasises that the goal is to embark on a journey towards an energy model for the island that aligns with principles of environmental and economic sustainability.
Afonso asserts that Tenerife generates “expensive energy” through the use of fossil fuels, and that it is essential to “reverse this situation in order to create cleaner and more affordable energy, which will assist in diminishing the island’s carbon footprint.”
