The South Highway recovers its route as it passes through Oroteanda, in San Miguel de Abona. Since last August 24, traffic in both directions was diverted by a route enabled for it by the sea side of the TF-1 in order to undertake the construction of the underpass of the Oroteanda junction, located at kilometer 53,572. The general director of Road Infrastructure of the regional Executive, José Luis Delgado, showed his satisfaction because after «89 days of intense work» a work is completed that will assume «50% of the traffic of Las Chafiras».
Delgado emphasizes that these “facts, not words” will benefit the inhabitants of areas such as Las Galletas, Las Rozas, Guargacho, Aldea Blanca and Llano del Camello. Likewise, he values the performance itself and the speed with which it was carried out, remembering that “in March 2021 there was an order from the Supreme Court to stop the work, but on Sunday (yesterday) it is in service for the citizens.” At the same time, he announces that in the remaining time of this year “all the senses of the link will be operational.”
The construction of the Las Chafiras-Oroteanda link is part of the project for the third lane of TF-1, in the San Isidro-Las Américas section. The work officially began on November 26, 2018, with the signing of the reconsideration act, although the works began in March 2019. With a budget of 23,323,630 euros, in Las Chafiras it will have a type of roundabout elevated on the trunk of the TF-1, to which the TF-65 (Los Abrigos highway) and the two branches to Santa Cruz will connect, as well as the two collector-distribution routes in the south.
The new Oroteanda junction is under construction at kilometer 63.5, with two roundabouts of 60 meters in diameter and two traffic lanes of four meters each. The branches link with the collector-distribution routes and these with the trunk of the TF-1 and the Las Chafiras link.
On November 30, 2020, the first section of this work came into service, the connection between the new roundabout of the Polígono Las Chafiras, at its western end, and the roundabout on the Guargacho-Las Galletas highway (TF-652).
