The Tenerife Island Council will sponsor the construction of 188 new social housing units via the Activate Soil programme in municipalities with a population of less than 20,000 residents, according to Sonia Hernández, the Councillor for Municipal Cooperation and Housing, on Tuesday.

With a total budget of 1,400,750 euros, the municipalities benefitting include Los Silos (14 homes), El Sauzal (52 homes), El Rosario (25 homes), Buenavista del Norte (26 homes), Santiago del Teide (50 homes), and La Victoria de Acentejo (21 homes), as indicated in a statement by the Cabildo.

Hernández has clarified that the funding line from this island programme is designated for the purchasing of plots, the execution of urbanisation works on council-owned land, and for the acquisition of land followed by subsequent urbanisation efforts.

Moreover, the island councillor underscores that in all instances, the land must be appropriate for the construction of protected rental housing.

The Activa Suelo programme has an initial budget of 1,500,000 euros, co-financed by the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), with the potential to extend the initial credit this year by an additional 1,000,000 euros to accommodate the increasing number of applications.

The Tenerife Council clarifies that the maximum aid amount available to each municipality has been set at 250,000 euros.

The municipality of Los Silos is also included in this funding for the purchase of land suitable for construction, receiving a grant of 150,750 euros for 14 homes.

Currently, the municipalities of El Sauzal, with 52 homes receiving a subsidy of 250,000 euros, and El Rosario, with 25 homes and a subsidy of 250,000 euros, are undertaking urban development works on municipal land.

Finally, concerning land acquisitions and urbanisation works, Buenavista del Norte is allocated a total of 26 homes with a subsidy of 250,000 euros; Santiago del Teide, with 50 homes and a subsidy of 250,000 euros; and La Victoria de Acentejo, with 21 homes and a subsidy of 250,000 euros.
