Yesterday, La Laguna City Council emphasised that throughout the year, it has been engaged in “considerable maintenance and enhancement activities” across several of the 46 community centres within the municipality, ensuring they remain warm and functional spaces for over 30,000 visitors each month.

The yearly maintenance strategy, overseen by the Department of Citizen Participation, aims to address the fundamental requirements of the centres. Tasks include repairs ranging from painting and inspecting electrical systems to carpentry, plumbing, and masonry work.

Over the past year, efforts have been concentrated on centres such as El Coromoto, El Ortigal, Vistamar, San Matías, La Candelaria, Finca España, and Las Madres de Padre Anchieta, among others.

The councillor responsible for the area, Fran Hernández, clarified that these actions are routine and underscored that “our aim is to ensure that the facilities are in prime condition for citizens”. Furthermore, regular meetings and site visits are conducted to evaluate their needs and collaborate with local associations and groups that utilise the facilities.

According to Hernández, these centres are much more than mere structures; “they represent the essence of community involvement, serving as meeting points that act as engines for social and cultural engagement.” These venues “have evolved into hubs of intergenerational activities and learning, where individuals of all ages can connect and contribute to the common good, playing a vital role in reinforcing the community fabric,” he emphasised.

The council arranges various free recreational workshops each season, with new offerings already in preparation for the upcoming season, which commences in September. This latest edition will feature innovative programmes, in response to residents’ requests, such as cooking, sign language, make-up, and new technologies.
