The National Police is implementing a dedicated policing initiative in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to deter incidents of theft from vehicles parked on public roads.

With the onset of the summer season, it is essential to introduce targeted measures in response to a gradual rise, albeit not alarming, in specific criminal activities, such as theft from vehicles occurring in tourist hotspots, beaches, or scenic viewpoints.

Three apprehended for vehicle theft

As part of this operation, three individuals were recently apprehended in the capital of Tenerife for their alleged involvement in crimes of theft from vehicles and for the theft or unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The suspects reportedly frequented areas with a significant tourist presence, such as bathing locations and beaches in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to execute the crimes for which they were detained.

The investigation revealed that they utilised rented vehicles to pose as tourists and avoid detection by law enforcement.

Following meticulous observation and surveillance to identify vehicles to target, they predominantly acted on those where owners had left valuable items in plain sight.

Safety Advice

The National Police advises adhering to the following guidelines to prevent such crimes:

  • Ensure that you consistently secure your vehicle’s doors and windows, even if you are away for a brief moment. Never leave the keys in the ignition.
  • Avoid leaving backpacks, handbags, mobile phones, or other valuables visible on the dashboard or front seats.
  • Do not store keys for garages or residences in your vehicle.
  • If possible, park your vehicle in well-lit areas, steering clear of isolated spots.

Members of the public who witness such incidents are also reminded that they can report them to the National Police by dialling the emergency hotline 091 or 112.
