SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 22 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tenerife Island Council has reiterated its dedication to the preservation and promotion of traditional attire on Thursday during the celebration of ‘International Folklore Day’, honouring those artistic and indigenous expressions that embody the traditions, customs, and cultural characteristics of various regions around the globe, thus enhancing national identity.

The council also pays homage to all scholars, researchers, and advocates of folklore and cultural traditions of the communities, as detailed in a statement.

The Minister of Education and Employment, Efraín Medina, emphasises the necessity of advancing research into clothing.

“If we do not diligently care for our legacy and heritage, we risk losing something profoundly important, like our history and the gifts bequeathed to us by our ancestors. Clothing serves as a significant carrier of socioeconomic knowledge, reflecting the historical context, time, and place in which it is worn. Consequently, it deserves as much respect as any other aspect of our cultural heritage,” he articulates.

Medina further states that he is fulfilling the “directive” of the president, Rosa Dávila, “who has successfully increased the budget by 1000% to ensure that research efforts can continue, and that is precisely what will be undertaken.”

The Minister of Education and Employment commended the achievements of the Tenerife Traditional Clothing Sector Council in arranging travelling exhibitions across all municipalities of the island.

He also recalled the recent release of a book aimed at fostering awareness of this type of cultural and ethnographic heritage in the archipelago.

The texts were authored by Juan de la Cruz Rodríguez and Dulce Rodríguez de la Rosa, under the guidance of the Tenerife Traditional Clothing Sector Council.

The illustrations were created by Prebendado Pereira Pacheco, Alfred Diston, Luis Davila Viera, Rima Ciplyte, José Padrino, and Arón Morales Pérez.

Additionally, the expansion of the audiovisual catalogue of traditional Canarian attire has been introduced, featuring 30 videos produced by the Sectorial Council of Traditional Clothing of Tenerife.

The videos showcase 15 examples of both women’s and men’s outfits, along with 10 additional styles that were developed at the inception of the organisation.
