Balancing Tourism in the Canary Islands: Costs vs. Benefits

With a conflicted heart. This is how the inhabitants of the Canaries seem to perceive tourism within the Islands. Eight out of ten individuals agree that this economic sector provides numerous advantages to the region and aids in its advancement, yet they also feel it significantly contributes to soaring housing prices and an overall rise in living expenses. This conclusion stems from the Survey of Habits and Socioeconomic Confidence, which centres on the perception of tourism in the Canary Islands, conducted by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac) during an era when the prevailing model is scrutinised more than ever. The investigation took place during the second quarter of the year, with the manifestations of April 20 serving as a backdrop. During this time, thousands of residents took to the streets across the Canary Islands to protest against the overabundance of tourists, which they believe is afflicting the Archipelago, as well as the repercussions it has on the degradation of natural areas, infrastructure, public services, and the quality of life for its residents.
