The Commerce Department of La Orotava Town Council, led by Deisy Ramos, aims to position the town as one of the most innovative in promoting its culinary and dining offerings. To accomplish this, it has introduced a new initiative called Mi barraquito tu zaperoco, a competition showcasing this pairing of sweet coffee drinks, which are immensely popular in Tenerife. This event is taking place for the first time in the Canary Islands, although a barraquito route already exists solely in Santiago del Teide.

All cafes and restaurants within the town are eligible to participate in this competition, running from 15 September to 15 October. Patrons wishing to partake and enjoy this experience can vote for their preferred creation in each category, thus entering a special draw for the occasion, which includes an overnight stay for two at the Teide National Parador with breakfast and lunch provided.

This initiative is being implemented primarily to enhance and promote the restaurant sector in the town. “It will serve as a platform for businesses within this sub-sector to attract more clientele, and we are hopeful that it will yield a considerable economic impact,” states the councillor.

Boosting Tourist Appeal

The mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, emphasises the municipality’s appeal to tourists, which is further enhanced by promotions and campaigns of this kind, intended for both locals and visitors alike.

In this regard, he remarks that “we are confident that this route-competition will be beneficial, as barraquitos and zaperocos are integral components of Canarian cuisine, particularly in Tenerife, and more specifically on the northern part of the Island.”

These distinctive beverages have developed a level of sophistication and a variety of ingredients in their preparation, making them unique and striking, thereby setting them apart from offerings in the rest of the nation. “In general, we believe that it will serve as an attraction and will encourage increased footfall to the participating venues, thereby aiding in the stimulation of the local economy,” adds the Orotava mayor.
