Roads projects the third lane from the Polígono de Güímar to San Isidro

The Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Canary Islands Government starts the Drafting of the project for the third lane of the Autopista del Sur between the links of the Polígono Industrial de Güímar and San Isidro, in Granadilla de Abona, work that is part of the Agreement between the Ministry of Public Works and the Public Administration of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands on roads 2018-2027. It is almost 36 kilometers of route that make up “the most complicated section” of the TF-1, explains José Luis Delgado, general director of Road Infrastructure.

The first of the difficulties is the highway tunnel at the height of Güímar. The solution is to build a new one, since the current structure does not have the capacity to house the third lane in each direction. The proposal being considered determines to build one of the mouths on top of the current ones, widening the one that remains in the center to resize it to the needs of the new route and the mouth closest to the sea will also serve as the new connection route of the TF-1 with El Puertito de Güímar, which will also use the existing one in La Caleta-Punta Prieta.

The General Directorate of Road Infrastructure plans the work contemplating the commissioning of the newly built tunnel before closing the central mouth for its expansion.

Another aspect to take into account, due to its relevance, is the direct link Puerto de Granadilla-Autopista del Sur. The existing Chimiche-El Río-Las Maretas will be used. This enclave will change its appearance since its adaptation to the requirements of the traffic of a dock of the characteristics of the one located in the Granadilla Industrial Park is required.

But José Luis Delgado warns of another added difficulty. In almost all of the almost 36 kilometers of route that make up this new third lane of the TF-1 there is no space to build it. The consequence is that “all the links will have to be knocked down” to undertake their reconstruction, adapting them to the needs.

Likewise, the CEO announces that the project will take into account the passing of the currently existing services, “Mainly telecommunications”. In the case of the future Tren del Sur, its passage through the Güímar Valley would be above the third mouth of the new tunnel.

The general director of Road Infrastructure of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Luis Delgado, announces that the tender for the drafting of the project will take place during the first quarter of next year.
