The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Primary Sector department led by councillor Valentín González, has unveiled a campaign titled Avocados from Tenerife. This initiative aims to highlight the significance of understanding the source, which must be properly certified, when purchasing agricultural goods, as stated by the councillor.
Valentín González clarified that “with this new campaign, we seek to encourage the consumption of local avocados, along with its cultivation and distribution, ensuring that no avocado is bought outside of official distribution channels where traceability of the product cannot be assured. This approach serves to regulate both the pricing and the quality of the product.”
Continuity
He further emphasised that this initiative is a continuation of a campaign that was launched during December 2023 and January 2024, which yielded “very positive” results, as the number of complaints and inspections of avocado farms decreased, according to González.
The island’s councillor for the Primary Sector noted that “it is crucial to remember that avocado production in Tenerife mainly occurs between September and June, while only the Reed variety, which still has a minor presence on the Islands, is produced during the summer months.”
This campaign encompasses certain aspects, including the obligation for distributors and marketers to ensure that avocados are presented in the best possible conditions for consumption, specifically in optimal ripeness, thus preventing the acquisition of products that have been harvested prematurely or do not adhere to safety timelines for the application of phytosanitary treatments.
