The Pinolere Cultural Association, a charitable organisation and recipient of the 2006 Canary Islands Popular Culture Award, made a unanimous decision amongst its members at the recent Ordinary General Assembly held in July to present the annual awards by which this cultural entity honours institutions, businesses, or individuals associated with it. This accolade is bestowed each year during the inauguration of the Fair, under the title of Cho Feriantes de Honor, taking place this year from 6 to 8 September.
The business award for this year is conferred upon Gente Radio. The assembly noted that this station is marking 25 years of uninterrupted broadcasting on Tenerife’s airwaves this year, having been established in 1999 at the initial studios in La Matanza de Acentejo by José Antonio Reyes. In 2001, it relocated to the La Calera area of Puerto de La Cruz, and several distinguished journalists have appeared on its broadcasts.
The institutional category is awarded to Artenerife (an island company under Artesanía SA), which was founded by the Cabildo de Tenerife in 1989 as part of its strategy to rejuvenate highly vulnerable economic sectors through public enterprises. Its aim is to protect and promote the artisan sector, significantly affected by the influx of low-quality and inexpensive products, many of which are imitations, primarily originating from the East. The organisation seeks innovative marketing and distribution strategies that provide a more effective outlet for local products, thereby ensuring the preservation or enhancement of the income received by our artisans.
Lastly, the individual accolade seeks to honour those who have supported and defended the aims of the cultural association. This year, it will be presented to councillor Yurena Luis Díaz, who has been dedicated to her community, her town, and her neighbourhood of Pinolere from a young age. The councillor has participated in the Pinolere Craft Fair since its inception, when her father Leoncio and mother Fidela introduced her to the event for the first time when she was merely a few months old in 1984. Since that moment, she has continued to attend, engage, commit herself, and work closely with the Association and its cultural initiatives.
