Risk of Fire: Tenerife Bans Fires in Recreational Areas

The Council of Tenerife will enforce prevention measures against forest fires starting at 7 a.m. today, implementing level 1 restrictions that prohibit igniting fires in recreational and outdoor spaces, including barbecues, bonfires, stoves, and gas cookers.
Smoking is also restricted in recreational areas, camping sites, trails, viewing points, and other public infrastructure situated in the mountains. This decision is made based on the prevailing weather conditions and the pre-alert status for high temperatures and forest fire risk issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands.

EQUIPMENT

The restrictions also encompass a prohibition on using any machinery or tools that could generate sparks (such as brush cutters, welding equipment, or radial saws), as well as the prohibition of pyrotechnic materials in high-risk zones, except for machinery employed in post-fire restoration work from the major fire incident in 2023.
Fireworks below 800 metres are allowed, but only with prior authorisation from the Cabildo. Local municipalities are urged to exercise utmost caution when using such materials.
It is advised not to access or remain in forested areas of the island during this alert situation and to take extra precautions across the entire island to prevent fire-causing activities. The level 1 forest fire prevention restrictions will remain in effect until the alert status is lifted.

YELLOW ALERT

The State Meteorological Agency has issued a yellow weather warning for today due to expected maximum temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius in the mid-mountain regions of southern and western Gran Canaria, with potential local highs of 37 degrees. Additionally, there is a yellow alert for very strong gusts anticipated from mid-afternoon in El Paso (La Palma) and the eastern part of La Gomera.
Tomorrow, temperatures are projected to rise slightly. Aemet maintains the yellow warning for maximum temperatures of up to 36 degrees in the mid-southern and western areas of Gran Canaria, where temperatures could locally surpass 39 degrees, as well as 34 degrees in the mid-southern part of the western islands. Strong winds are expected to persist in El Paso.
Weather models do not indicate significant temperature changes for Monday, with a potential development of high-altitude haze and the chance of light precipitation in the peaks of Tenerife and the eastern islands, possibly continuing into Tuesday, accompanied by a slight temperature decrease.
