The future of Viera y Clavijo Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, an iconic building currently undergoing renovation works, is starting to take form. The refurbishment of this space, following architect Fernando Menis’ project and with a scheduled two-year completion period, is expected to be finalised by 2026. Once completed, the building will reopen to the public and will house an auditorium, a library and study area, permanent and temporary exhibition rooms, a large cafeteria, and a restaurant.
The councillor of the Autonomous Cultural Organization (OAC), Santiago Diaz, announced to DIARY OF NOTICES that “Viera y Clavijo will become a cultural hub, and to achieve this, we are diligently exploring various proposals, nationally and internationally, such as those in Madrid, Barcelona, or Argentina, to gather ideas and adapt them to the new space in the capital.”
The councillor mentioned that “the goal is to transform this park into a multicultural and versatile venue, where all forms of art have a platform to collaborate with Canarian actors, sculptors, painters, and dancers. A vibrant creative hub, fostering a continuous art flow, leading to the creation of projects that we can later showcase to the world.” Díaz added, “We envision Viera y Clavijo as a prominent arts centre, not only for Santa Cruz but for the entire island. Moreover, there will be a permanent exhibition and captivating temporary exhibitions.”
Regarding whether the cultural park will eventually house the Óscar Domínguez museum, the councillor emphasised that “the display of this Canarian artist will remain at TEA, although we are exploring other possibilities that could be accommodated in the new cultural venue. The primary objective is for it to be a space for self-expression, something we lack and need to support across all disciplines, ranging from theatre to dance, painting, or sculpture.”
Díaz also mentioned that “the city is progressing in the field of Culture. Consequently, we have covered the outer facade of Viera y Clavijo with a 3.08-metre high and 118-metre long canvas to promote the mobile application, #SoyCulturaSC, available on iOS and Android, to the residents. Through the app, they can access information about the various performing arts events scheduled in the city and purchase event tickets.” The app currently has 1,576 downloads: 538 on iOS and 1,038 on Android.
