SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 15th August (EUROPA PRESS) –
The 2024 version of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking, has positioned the University of La Laguna in the 501-600th range globally, marking the highest achievement for the Canarian academic institution since the inception of this ranking 22 years ago. In comparison, the university held the 701-800th place in the past three editions of the ARWU.
Curated by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jia Tong University, this ranking is among the most widespread globally. The evaluation criteria considers various aspects of each academic institution, including the presence of Nobel Prize-winning alumni and faculty members, institutional size, publication of articles in prominent journals like ‘Nature’ and ‘Science’, as well as the citation count of the scientific work produced by the faculty.
The University of La Laguna has excelled particularly in the research domain according to these criteria, showcasing impressive performance in publications in renowned journals and articles indexed in the Web of Science, along with having a highly cited research faculty.
Since the 2019 edition, the ranking has expanded to include the classification of the top thousand universities globally, as opposed to the previous practice of listing only the top 500. In this edition, 36 Spanish institutions feature on the list, with the University of La Laguna securing a position in the 11-16 range. Notably, the institution stands out in research performance, ranking fourth nationally for publications in ‘Nature’ and ‘Science’.
