The Anaga Massif boasts authentic treasures, not just for the eyes but for the senses as well. It’s a place where nature flourishes in all its magnificence, intertwining with the history of its villages, where locals continue to strive to uphold the traditions of the past. The climate, volcanic soil rich in basaltic minerals, along with the determination and expertise of the farmers, have created an area where agriculture has been the primary driver of a subsistence economy, centred on self-sufficiency. Here, unique products like the Borrella or Melonera potato shine.

This particular tuber, with a long-standing history dating back to its seeds’ arrival from Peru over 500 years ago, has become the culinary highlight of Anaga, especially in Chinamada, Bejia, El Batán, Las Carboneras, Taborno, the higher parts of Afur, Roque Negro, and Taganana. Possessing a robust, round texture and small size but considerable weight, this potato can be stored for up to a year and is a delight to eat. Yet, the villagers note that over the years, its cultivation has dwindled due to various factors, primarily the abandonment of rural areas by the population, coupled with droughts and pest infestations affecting the crops.

However, there are still locals who are unwilling to let go of this cultural emblem, like Iván. “Borrella potatoes are still being cultivated in small quantities for personal use or for local restaurants. Hence, those who have melon fields today possess a treasure,” he explains. The Borrella potato not only stands out in Anaga but, according to research, is unique to the Canary Islands. Characterized by its elongated shape, moderately deep eyes, and a light brown skin with hints of orange, it is indeed a culinary delight. It is also honoured annually, notably in Taborno, where the Borrella Potato Festival takes place at the end of November, now in its eighth edition. To preserve the seed, production has expanded to other areas like La Esperanza, El Sauzal, Tegueste, San Juan de la Rambla, Icod el Alto, and the Teno Rural Park.
