SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 14th August (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Council of Tenerife Island and one hundred young individuals from the global expedition Ruta INTI have engaged in a beach cleaning initiative today in Güímar and Arafo. They also released a loggerhead turtle (caretta caretta) as part of promoting environmental values.

The event was coordinated by the Cabildo’s Office of Environmental Participation and Volunteering, with the collaboration of Güímar and Arafo Town Councils, and the groups Asociación Recreativa, Cultural y Deportiva Terramare, Fundación Canaria Telesforo Bravo Juan Coello, and Club Deportivo Aguavenque.

Among those present at the event were the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila; the Councillor for the Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez; the Councillor for Youth and Training, Serafín Mesa; and the Island Director of the Natural Environment, Pedro Millán. Also in attendance were the Mayors of Güímar and Arafo, Gustavo Pérez and Juan Ramón Martín, respectively.

Rosa Dávila expressed gratitude to the young participants for their dedication and commitment to sustainability and the protection of our natural surroundings. “Through this activity, we reaffirm our dedication to the Alliance in Defense of the Oceans and the Tenerife Coastline, showcasing a collective effort to safeguard our seas from pollution, conserve our marine ecosystems, and guarantee that forthcoming generations can relish this valuable natural inheritance,” she stated.

Dávila mentioned that the turtle had been rehabilitated at the La Tahonilla Wildlife Recovery Centre after being rescued by fishermen in Adeje, at Puerto Colón. The reason for its admission was due to plastic ingestion, reinforcing the call for ecosystem preservation. “The release of the turtle back into its habitat signifies hope and underscores Tenerife’s commitment in the battle for the conservation of our marine species,” she highlighted.

The initiative encompassed an environmental workshop and involved the collection of abandoned waste from El Socorro Beach and Chimisay Beach to Puertito de Güímar, traversing through the protected natural area of Malpaís de Güímar.

The INTI Route is a social and cultural scheme for young people from across the globe, designed to foster cultural exchange among participants and enrich the surrounding environmental and social setting. Through varied experiences and interactions with individuals from diverse cultures, participants will cultivate a comprehensive and critical outlook that will pave the way for a fresh spirit of international collaboration and advancement.
