SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 14th August (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands are currently experiencing a new wave of heat, resulting in maximum temperatures exceeding 30 degrees in some areas of the archipelago this morning. In fact, three of the top ten warmest locations in the country were found in the islands since midnight, based on data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) as reported by Europa Press.

One of the locations that experienced high temperatures last night was the town of Tejeda in Gran Canaria, where temperatures reached 31.9 degrees at 00.20 hours, making it the second highest temperature in the country this morning. Additionally, notable were the 31.6 degrees recorded at 00.00 hours at the Aemet station in Lomo de Pedro Alfonso and the 31.1 degrees registered at 04.30 hours in Cuevas del Pinar, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

This period of high temperatures has also brought strong winds, with the top ten windiest locations in the country this morning all being in the Canary Islands: Agaete (90 km/h); La Aldea de San Nicolás (80 km/h); Fuencaliente (76 km/h); Gran Canaria Airport (74 km/h); Lanzarote Airport (72 km/h); El Matorral, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (72 km/h); Agüimes (70 km/h); Tenerife South Airport (67 km/h), and Tinajo (67 km/h).

The forecast for this latest temperature spike affecting the entire Archipelago has led the Canary Islands Government to extend the pre-alert for high temperatures to cover the entire archipelago since last Monday.

With temperatures rising to 37 degrees in some areas, coupled with the ongoing meteorological drought in the islands, the risk of wildfires remains high. Consequently, the General Directorate of Emergencies has maintained an alert status for the western islands and Gran Canaria for the coming days.

In addition to these conditions, there are strong trade winds in open waters and coastal regions in the southeast, west, and northwest of the islands, leading to swells with waves reaching up to two metres high. As a result, the Canary Islands Government has placed all the islands on pre-alert for coastal phenomena.
