Yesterday, the Canarian wrestling community gathered at Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias for the traditional Luchada dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria. The mayor, Mari Brito, expressed her gratitude to the almost 70 wrestlers who showcased their skills in the event featuring the indigenous sport as part of the August festivities. She also extended her thanks to all participating clubs, the Tenerife Wrestling Federation, and the Canary Islands Wrestling Federation for their enthusiastic involvement.
The first participants were the young members of the Candelaria Municipal Wrestling School and the Valle Guerra School, paying tribute to the historic Mid-Mountain fight in Barranco Hondo from 1834, where the finest fighters from the North and South sides competed for three days.
Representing Candelaria were: Alexey Torres Marrero, Aaron Herrera Brito, Leyre Torres Marrero, Dario Mendoza Rodriguez, Fayna Molina Ramos, Alexis Jorge Brito, Diego Molina Ramos, Iker Gonzalez Cruz, Iriome Fariña Guanche, Santiago Martin Gabino, and Aray Pinto Del Castillo. And from Guamasa: Diego Miranda Ramos, Duvan Martin Hernandez, Johanna Trujillo Adrian, Diego Izquierdo Dorta, Lucia Gonzalez Reyes, Yeray Barbuzano Perez, Raul Molina Perez, Gerard Hernandez Rodriguez, Ayoze Barbuzano Perez, Benahoare Gonzalez Rosado, Ubay Diaz Leon, Alejandro Gonzalez Reyes, Adrian Mendez de Leon, Enrique Mendez Hernandez, Ana Maria Molina Perez, and Said Gonzalez Hernandez. The referee was Francisco Marquez Correa.
FEMALE WRESTLING
Following that, it was time for the VI Women’s Wrestling competition, highlighting the increasing prominence of women in this sport. The South team, led by Melissa Pérez and Francisco Aguilar, included wrestlers: Selene Cabrera Mederos, Miriam Santana Ramos, Lucía Carballo, Macarena Santana Ramos, Ithaisa de Castro Suárez, Cecilia Rodríguez Hernández, Leyre González Díaz, and Sirenia Gabino Lorenzo. The North team, captained by Francisco Martín, featured wrestlers: Débora Carballo Hernández, Yerena Falero Martín, Laura Felipe Facundo, Aymar Martínez Díaz, Paula Lutzardo López, Mararia Quintana de Ganzo, Alexia González Díaz, and Aroa Martín Pestano. The match was overseen by referee Francisco Márquez Correa, table delegate Mireia Ramos, and collaborator Silvia Abreu.
The evening concluded with the XXVI Institutional Wrestling Tournament, bringing together two young teams from the provinces.
