The Island Council of Tenerife has recently examined the condition of the three most popular pilgrimage routes to Candelaria in preparation for the upcoming festival, mainly celebrated on the 14th and 15th of August. Among these three approved routes are the Lomo La Jara (Tacoronte)-Las Lagunetas (El Sauzal and La Matanza), Lomo Centeno-Barranco Hondo, continuing to Candelaria, spanning 19.6 kilometres. There is also the Aguamansa (La Orotava), La Crucita (Güímar), Arafo and Villa Mariana route, covering a total of 26.5 kilometers, and the Camino Viejo (La Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, El Rosario and Candelaria), with a length of 21.2km.
The Council has reiterated that walking along the paths affected by the devastating fire of 2023 is strictly prohibited due to the potential risks posed to individuals.
Technicians from the Civil Protection service conducted on-site inspections yesterday to verify the state of the pilgrimage routes. During the inspection, they ensured the functionality of telecommunications and systems in case of emergency calls. Moreover, specific signage was installed, and evacuation and rescue routes were established in case of a forest fire or any other emergency situation.
The president of the island, Rosa Dávila, stated, “We have been working for several months in coordination with various entities to set up a team of over 600 people. We urge caution to those embarking on the pilgrimage, advising them to be well-prepared with suitable attire, footwear, and an ample water supply. It is crucial that they adhere to regulations and follow authorities’ instructions.”
The Minister for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, elaborated, “We have created three designated routes for people to follow and act promptly in case of an emergency.” She reiterated, “It is strictly forbidden to traverse the paths affected by the significant 2023 fire due to the associated risks. Additionally, efforts are ongoing to eradicate radiata pines and stabilise slopes.”

RECOMMENDATIONS

The signage provides various suggestions and restrictions for undertaking the pilgrimage, including avoiding the TF-1 motorway, opting to travel during cooler hours of the day, wearing a hat, lightweight boots, comfortable clothing, and carrying an adequate water supply for multiple hours. It is advised to be prepared for sections with steep descents, walking on uneven terrain with loose stones. Furthermore, it is essential to refrain from deviating from the designated paths and trails to prevent damage to the surroundings and vegetation.
