The city council of Tacoronte announced yesterday that, during the latest plenary session, it has approved the purchase of the dilapidated building, known as La Rotonda, situated across from the Los Ficus building in the seaside village of Mesa del Mar. This acquisition aims to enhance the public services in the neighbourhood, featuring a modern design that blends in with the surroundings, ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike.
The proposal put forward by the political group Nueva Canarias (NC) received unanimous support from all factions within the city council. This decision marks the conclusion of a lengthy period of technical and administrative procedures required to secure the purchase, demolition, and transformation of the old structure into a versatile space. The revitalised space will include new changing rooms, a rest and recreational area, as well as additional parking facilities, among other amenities.
The Councillor for Urban Planning and Heritage, Tarsis Morales, highlighted that this project “is among the numerous initiatives that we have actively pursued since last summer, following years of lacking clear leadership that could resolve the impasse”. The unanimous approval of the NC motion by the current governing body “aims to establish certainty and a united approach within the council, embracing initiatives that benefit the city, showcasing our dedication and commitment to the people of Tacoronte, beyond conflicts and party interests,” he remarked.
Morales expressed disappointment at “the inaccuracies pointed out by the NC leader, as the delay that he mentions is due to the fact that the property is privately owned, entailing complex negotiations with several heirs, with whom we are striving to reach agreements to address other significant issues concerning Mesa del Mar.” “Our objective is to gradually resolve all outstanding matters, prioritising tasks in alignment with urban planning regulations and in consideration of the common good,” he added. On the financial aspect, the transaction is supported by a budget outline endorsed in October 2023 by the current administration, amounting to 160,000 euros following the property appraisal.
The local government has publicly affirmed its dedication to acquiring this plot, “which holds immense strategic importance for the present and future of Mesa del Mar, where the future sewage pumping station and the starting point of the proposed promenade are slated to be located,” stated Tacoronte’s mayor, Sandra Izquierdo.
