The Council of Tenerife has bolstered the operational Perseids in the Teide National Park on Monday, 12th August, with the presence of environmental agents and members of the Local Police of La Orotava, the Canary Islands Police, the Civil Guard, and park personnel.
Specialist reports indicate that the conditions will not permit a clear observation of the meteor shower at night, as the peak will occur between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Minister for the Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, along with the island directors of Security and Emergencies and the Environment, Iván Martín and Pedro Millán, respectively, met with representatives of the bodies and groups to outline the implementation of the planned operation in the Teide National Park and Corona Forestal.
Blanca Pérez explains, “Specialist reports indicate that the peak of the meteor shower is scheduled for Monday between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., meaning this year will not be ideal for witnessing the spectacle. Nonetheless, we will reinforce the operation due to potential gatherings of people in the Teide National Park.”
Pérez urges the population to “adhere to the instructions and respect the regulations. It is crucial to understand that parking on the road or in unauthorized areas is prohibited, as these roads must be kept clear for emergency evacuation purposes. Discussions have been held with the Teide Cable Car to open up additional parking spaces, but we emphasize the importance of civility and compliance with authority directives. Our primary concern is the safety of individuals.”
In this context, the Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies expresses gratitude for the cooperation of the Local Police of La Orotava, the Canary Police, and the Civil Guard, “who, alongside our environmental agents, will be monitoring to ensure individuals park in designated areas and follow the regulations. Nevertheless, we emphasize that this is not an optimal year for stargazing due to the absence of favourable conditions.”
