An enjoyable, unique, active, and inclusive summer is the aim of the debut edition of the inclusive campus organised by the Sports sector of the City Council this summer in Santa Cruz. This activity is designed for children aged between 6 and 17 with a minimum of 33% disability, be it physical or mental, allowing them to enjoy the city in a setting where they can engage in play, physical activities, and entertainment in the mornings, thereby supporting the balance of family life.

Situated at the Las Delicias sports complex in Ofra, the inclusive campus in its first edition from July 29 to August 9 has provided a total of 20 spots for disabled children with social autonomy. “The need for this summer activity was prompted by numerous families, thus we decided to launch it at Las Delicias. Here, children have been partaking in basketball, football, and adapted games under the supervision of the company Lude,” shared the Sports Councillor, Alicia Cebrián.

The councillor elaborated that the aim is to “promote and facilitate outdoor sports participation for all children in the municipality. As such, this inclusive campus is an addition to the over 2,700 spots offered this summer, including new activities such as introductory skateboarding courses at La Granja park, swimming at the Acidalio Lorenzo municipal swimming pool, the multi-sport campus at Las Teresitas beach, and an introductory surfing course at the beaches of Anaga”.

Cebrián highlighted that “the inclusive campus has been the focal point of innovation in this edition, offering a vast range of recreational and leisure activities according to the children’s individual needs who attended each week in shifts of ten. They were supervised by three leaders from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a cost of 56.75 Euros per week, inclusive of discounts for large families or those facing social vulnerability.”

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasised that “this inclusive campus, coupled with the extensive sports programme scheduled for summer, addresses the need for family balance during the school break. Consequently, no other municipality in Tenerife provides such a wide array of summer sports activities for children, all of high quality, like Santa Cruz”.

The councillor, alongside the Sports, Youth, and Ofra-Costa Sur district councillors, Alicia Cebrián, Charín González, and Santiago Díaz respectively, expressed that “this initiative has proven to be a challenge due to the diverse needs of the participants, but given its success during implementation, it is here to stay.”
