SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 9th August (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, held a meeting on Friday with representatives of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of La Luz and the Regional Federation of Brotherhoods of the Canary Islands on San Juan beach, in the municipality of Guía de Isora (Tenerife). During the meeting, he reiterated his pledge to urge the Spanish Government to grant financial aid to the small pelagic purse seine fishing fleet in the southern part of the island to temporarily halt fishing activities.
The Canary Islands Fisheries Department, in a press release, stated that this request is being made due to the declining presence of species such as mackerel and horse mackerel in the waters around the Canary Islands. Fishermen have reported a significant drop in catches of these species over recent years, mainly because the fish have migrated to other areas.
This situation has put fishermen and shipowners in a precarious position that threatens the economic sustainability of their livelihoods. Subsequently, after comprehensive discussions with all stakeholders, Minister Quintero pledged to explore potential measures aimed at alleviating the financial strain faced by this sector.
