The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Council of Guía de Isora have reached an agreement today, Wednesday, to initiate measures to regularize the situation of the facilities at the former fishing port of Alcalá, situated in the El Pris area. This decision was made during a meeting involving representatives from the Regional Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds of the Canary Islands and the Fishermen’s Guild of Nuestra Señora de La Luz in Playa San Juan.

In addition to the main building of the fishing port, a structure constructed by the Canarian Government on land owned by the local authority, and thus municipal property, this area comprises other buildings belonging to the Coastal zone such as the old fishing shelter or equipment rooms.

Upon the regularization of these infrastructures, the regional government and the Council will have the opportunity to invest in the refurbishment and enhancement of this area for fishing purposes as well as for other uses determined by the Guía de Isora council.

Narvay Quintero, the head of the Ministry, stated, “After many years, we have agreed to regularize in order to take action, that is, to define the ownership of each space in order to make investments; the intention of both the Government of the Canary Islands and the Council, along with the Federation and the fishermen, is to revitalize this very significant part of the municipality and of Alcalá.”

Mayor of Guía de Isora, Ana Dorta, emphasized, “It was crucial to clarify the ownership of these facilities to enable the current municipal government to reconfigure them and thus provide the desired usage by fishermen and other associations of Guía de Isora, making it an attraction for residents and visitors.”

David Pavón, the manager of the Regional Federation of Canary Islands Guilds, also elaborated that this is “a longstanding issue because this area accommodates facilities from Costas, Puertos Canarios and the Council. Fishing activities commenced in this port in Guía de Isora, although subsequently, with the establishment of the port of Playa San Juan, fishermen relocated there,” he added.

The meeting was also attended by the Director General of Fisheries of the Canary Islands Executive, Esteban Reyes, along with members of his team; the Senior Patron of the Fishermen’s Guild of Nuestra Señora de La Luz, Gilberto Sánchez Hernández; the representative and spokesperson of the Regional Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds of the Canary Islands, David Pavón, and the Councillor for Urban Planning, Animal Welfare and the Environment, Eulalia Vargas.
