SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 6th August (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Island Council of Tenerife will be initiating a plan to integrate the circular economy into the tourism sector of the island in a structured manner. This plan will involve conducting an assessment of the current situation, as well as running awareness campaigns and providing guidance to companies within the sector. These efforts aim to set the groundwork for the development of a circular economy within these businesses.
Lope Afonso, the Vice President and Minister of Tourism, has outlined that the initial phase of this plan has an estimated budget of 450,000 Euros. This initiative is part of the Tenerife Reset Strategy, a sustainability plan that comprehensively addresses the sustainable management of Tenerife as a tourist destination. The strategy has a total budget of 7,445,000 Euros, funded by the Government of Spain’s Sustainability Strategy.
Afonso emphasised that this plan aims to establish a model for the responsible management of the destination, focusing on practical and concrete sustainability solutions throughout the tourism value chain.
The Vice President of the Cabildo highlighted the institution’s dedication to a sustainable tourism model. This approach will enable Tenerife to align itself with the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring its competitiveness in the global tourism market.
The initial phase of the project involves conducting an assessment of the implementation of the circular economy and devising a roadmap for its continuous integration in the upcoming years. Following this assessment, awareness and training schemes on the circular economy and tourism sustainability will be rolled out. The plan also includes a training component targeted towards companies, residents, and local administrative staff.
Furthermore, the plan, scheduled to unfold over a period of 15 months, encompasses the creation of a business transformation programme towards circularity and tourism sustainability.
