On August 5, in SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, the Specialized Emergency Care Center (CEAU) of the Hospital del Norte, which belongs to the Canary Islands University Hospital Complex (HUC), commemorated its ten-year anniversary since its establishment on August 4, 2014 following the implementation of the II Regional Emergency Plan.
The main idea behind these new emergency care facilities was to establish a network of regional emergency care centers to enhance the quality of emergency services and improve the capacity of these institutions to respond promptly, thereby reducing referrals to hospital emergency departments.
With this objective in mind, healthcare professionals from Primary Care Emergencies and Hospital Emergencies were merged, and the CEAUs were equipped with enhanced diagnostic capabilities, as well as observation beds to accommodate patients who did not require hospitalization.
Over the past decade, they have treated 115,000 emergencies, averaging around 1,000 per month, with nine percent involving paediatric patients. Additionally, 20,000 patients have been attended to in the Observation Unit, accounting for seventeen percent of all emergencies.
