SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 4th August (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands are currently experiencing a new heatwave, leading to the recording of high temperatures this morning, surpassing 30 degrees in certain areas of the archipelago. In fact, four out of the ten hottest places in the country since midnight have been in the islands, according to information from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) as reported by Europa Press.

Last night, one of the locations experiencing intense heat was San Bartolomé de Tirajana municipality in Gran Canaria, where the Aemet station in Cuevas del Pinar registered 32.5 degrees at 00:50 hours, making it the highest temperature in the country this morning. Additionally, temperatures of 31.8 degrees were recorded at the Las Tirajanas station at 01:50 hours, and 31.6 degrees at Lomo Pedro Alfonso at 01:00 hours.

Another area where temperatures soared above 30 degrees was Suerte Alta in Agaete, where thermometers marked 31.5 degrees at midnight, while Tejeda was approaching 32 degrees (31.8 ºC) by 09:30 hours.

This heatwave has also brought strong winds, which yesterday disrupted operations at Tenerife South Airport. Today, gusts of over 60 km/h have been recorded in Agüimes (64 km/h); Fuencaliente (68 km/h); Lanzarote Airport (68 km/h); Suerte Alta in Agaete (69 km/h); and La Aldea de San Nicolás (70 km/h).

Since 10:00 a.m. yesterday, Saturday, there has been an alert for high temperatures in Gran Canaria due to the ongoing heatwave primarily affecting the interior, mountainous areas, and southern regions of the island. Temperatures have consistently risen above 34-37 degrees, leading Aemet to issue an orange warning (significant risk).

Precautionary measures are also in place in the western islands due to temperatures exceeding 30-34 degrees in the interiors, highlands, and peaks on the eastern, southern, and western slopes, maintaining a yellow warning (risk).

The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands is also on alert for the risk of wildfires on El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria since 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
