San Cristóbal de La Laguna Promotes UNESCO Recognition at Tenerife Sports City

San Cristóbal de La Laguna will be showcased at the prestigious Javier Perez Sports City of Tenerife Sports Club to highlight its status as the only town in the Canary Islands declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

This initiative is part of the agreement signed this year between the City Council, the Autonomous Sports Body of La Laguna, and the Tenerife entity to boost sports in the municipality and establish groundwork for future collaborations.

During the presentation on August 1, attended by Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, CD Tenerife President Paulino Rivero, and Tenerife Inter-Island Football Federation (FIFT) President Alejandro Morales, the partnership was emphasised. Also in presence were Councillor for Sports of La Laguna, Badel Albelo; Councillor for Heritage, Adolfo Cordobés; and Vice-President of the OAD of La Laguna, Carla Cabrera.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez expressed the significance of connecting the La Laguna City Council with the esteemed Tenerife Sports Club, especially with the sports city becoming the official sub-venue for the 2030 Football World Cup. He highlighted the opportunity to promote the rich heritage and UNESCO recognition internationally in the coming years.

Paulino Rivero underlined football as a vital tool for showcasing the excellence of cities like San Cristóbal de La Laguna, instilling values and promoting equality. He mentioned sport as a means to highlight the architectural wonders of the municipality.

Alejandro Morales pointed out Tenerife’s selection as the sole sub-venue in the Canary Islands for the 2030 World Cup, stating that several teams will visit the Javier Pérez Sports City to prepare for the competition and familiarise themselves with the facilities beforehand.

Tenerife Chosen as Sub-Venue for 2030 World Cup

The Javier Pérez Sports City – CD Tenerife was recently designated by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) as a sub-venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, allowing any participating team to utilise the facilities.

The process to include CD Tenerife Sports City as a training centre began in late 2023 following a proposal by the Tenerife Inter-Island Football Federation (FIFT) for Tenerife to host training and accommodation centres. A delegation from the 2030 World Cup organisation visited the island in January 2024 to assess the facilities.

After two years of work by the Executive Committee, RFEF announced the inclusion of CD Tenerife Sports City as a proposed sub-venue for the 2030 World Cup dossier.

The final decision on the use of sub-venues, including the Javier Pérez Sports City, will lie with the participating teams in the 2030 World Cup, following an evaluation by FIFA.
