Mayor González of Puerto Accuses ACP of Treason and Denounces Unfair Censorship

The mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González (PSOE), accused the Asamblea Ciudadana Portuense (ACP) of “treachery” in a press conference held yesterday. He criticised them for forming an alliance with the right in what he described as an “unnatural and unjust vote of no confidence,” which he believes has brought shame to the people of Puerto de la Cruz.

González defended his administration and reminded everyone that the PSOE had emerged victorious in the last local elections, narrowly missing an absolute majority by just 14 votes. He expressed disappointment during the recent socialist party gathering on May 1st. The incumbent mayor accused the ACP spokesperson, David Hernández, of being caught in a “web of lies and audacity.” He also criticised the fact that the vote of no confidence was signed on Monday, contradicting what the signatory parties had conveyed to the public.

González responded to the morning arguments put forward by the ACP, stating that “financial suffocation means failing to effectively manage over 75% of the budget allocated throughout the year, which is precisely what the ACP has failed to do.”

The socialist leader, who has secured victory in the past three elections, accused the ACP councillors of being “dishonest” and committing “a blatant betrayal of their party’s voters, ultimately paving the way for the right to regain control of the Mayor’s Office and local government.” He expressed gratitude to the residents of El Puerto for their support during these “challenging” times and reiterated that the ACP had fabricated a false narrative to justify their actions.

In his view, the Assembly councillors had been planning this vote of no confidence for months, with the PP consistently offering their support. He highlighted the detrimental impact on PSOE areas due to the lack of local staff and urged all motion signatories to reflect on the consequences.

“The individual speaking to you does not require the position of mayor. Perhaps others depend on the salary. I do not. I have a job to return to, and I am not willing to die for the position of mayor. This city may suffer,” he remarked, while emphasising the progress made in the area during his term. His party also condemned “the unethical tactics and schemes that tarnish politics.”
