Residents’ associations in the Somosierra and Azorín neighbourhoods urged Santa Cruz City Council to enhance security measures due to the continuous presence of homeless individuals near the Municipal Shelter (CAM).

In response, local representatives met with Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and other municipal officials to address the growing issue of homelessness in the area.

The mayor stated, “We have committed to increasing police presence in these neighbourhoods, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. We will also request the National Police to deploy additional officers to enhance security. Furthermore, the installation of surveillance cameras in Somosierra Park will be considered to improve safety for residents round the clock.”

Regarding homeless individuals with dual pathology, such as those struggling with addiction and/or mental health issues, the City Council will engage with the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Tenerife to explore street care options and specialised treatment.

Moreover, the mayor revealed plans to explore the feasibility of establishing municipal services in the vicinity, particularly around Pancho Camurria, to utilise the spaces effectively and restrict public access as is currently the case.

Councillor Zaida González of the Salud-La Salle district described the meeting positively, highlighting efforts to coordinate with residents and call for collaboration from other authorities. She emphasised the neighbourhood’s supportiveness, housing the Municipal Reception Centre, hygiene facilities, and food services for the homeless.

Councillor Gladis de León, responsible for Security, reaffirmed the mayor’s commitment to increasing police presence. She stated, “The Security department is dedicated to enhancing security in the area, and we will collaborate with the National Police as announced by José Manuel Bermúdez.”

In addition to Zaida González and Gladis de León, the meeting was attended by Councillor Carlos Tarife for Public Services, Councillor Charín González for Social Care, and Evelyn Alonso overseeing Mobility.
