Canary Islands Extends Alert for Coastal Events Across Whole Archipelago

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 31 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of the Canary Islands’ General Directorate of Emergencies has revised the pre-alert status for coastal events, extending it to cover the whole archipelago from 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, 31st July.

This decision is based on Aemet’s forecast and other available sources, following the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena PFMA (Decree 18/2014, 20th March).

Projections suggest a southern swell exceeding 1.5 metres on the western and southern coasts of the western islands, gradually subsiding by the first half of tomorrow, Thursday. These conditions may result in altered currents and drag in bathing areas, potentially posing risks to swimmers and coastal structures.

Furthermore, northeasterly winds of 5-6 force (30-50 km/h) are anticipated from tomorrow, escalating to 7 force (51-61 km/h) in coastal regions of the southeast and northeast with elevated altitudes, as well as in the open seas between the islands. The forecast also expects rough to heavy swells and rough sea sections at sea, along with combined sea swells of 2-4 meters.

The public is advised to heed the self-protection recommendations issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies.
