Emergency Works to Rehabilitate Bridges in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is set to commence emergency works next week to restore the bridges crossing the Santos ravine between Plaza Europa and Avenida Marítima, due to the risk of potential structural collapse.
City reports have highlighted the advanced corrosion of the structural reinforcements of both bridges, attributed to the impact of runoff and corrosive phenomena from the marine environment they are situated in.
On July 1, the municipal governing board approved the urgent declaration of the works as an emergency and awarded the project with a budget of 2.3 million euros, with a deadline of 12 months for completion.
The rehabilitation works will entail the closure of Plaza Europa to facilitate repairs on both the interior and upper sections of the bridges.
Preparations for the works have already commenced with the establishment of a work station and material storage area, in anticipation of the year-long project duration.
The focus of the works will primarily be on structural repairs to the undersides of the bridge decks and the renovation of pillars responsible for enhancing the load-bearing capacity.
Initially, the repairs will target the lower sections, with plans to proceed to the upper sections within three to four months.
Subsequently, a second phase will involve the closure of Plaza Europa to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
