Presentation of Strategic Framework for Elderly Care in Tenerife

Yesterday, the Tenerife Fairgrounds was the venue for the unveiling of the Strategic Framework for Elderly Care in Tenerife, a vital first step towards the launch of Islénior Mayores de Tenerife. This comprehensive plan aims to cater to the needs of the elderly populace from a holistic perspective. Over 400 individuals, including seniors from across the island, municipal representatives, and professionals from various sectors, gathered for the introduction of this initiative. The plan, set to be in effect until 2030, is centred around five key areas of focus: autonomy, social environment, territoriality, management, and well-being, along with corresponding communication strategies.

In his address, Vice President of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso, emphasised that “today, we are fulfilling a longstanding obligation that Tenerife owes to its elderly residents.” He underscored that “this strategy embodies a truly overarching vision, highlighting the invaluable contribution seniors make to society.”

Afonso also highlighted, “following the participatory process, we are now equipped with the necessary insights to provide more accurate and effective responses to the demands of the elderly population. Our approach must extend beyond merely catering to their recreational needs, encompassing critical issues like combating loneliness, social healthcare provision, social tourism, active participation in public life, and other measures aimed at ensuring a vibrant and dignified existence.”

The Councillor for Social Action, Águeda Fumero, expressed her delight at the milestone, describing it as “a momentous occasion for the Cabildo de Tenerife and a thrilling development for the Social Action sector.” She highlighted the gathering of individuals who actively participated in the formulation of ‘Islénior’, emphasising their integration into a society that has long called for the local government to spearhead a programme that addresses their needs and upholds their rights.

Fumero drew attention to the demographics, stating that “currently, 40% of Tenerife’s population is aged over 50, and 14.5% are over 65, underscoring the need for the authorities to possess the requisite tools to meet the demands of this significant portion of the populace.”
