SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 30th July (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Council of Tenerife, in collaboration with the Education Department of the Canary Islands Government, has launched a book to raise awareness about the cultural and ethnographic heritage of traditional clothing in the archipelago.

The texts were authored by Juan de la Cruz Rodríguez and Dulce Rodríguez de la Rosa, under the supervision of the Traditional Clothing Sectorial Council of Tenerife. The illustrations were provided by Prebendado Pereira Pacheco, Alfred Diston, Luis Dávila Viera, Rima Ciplyte, José Padrino, and Arón Morales Pérez.

The book was unveiled today, Tuesday, at the Salón Noble of the Cabildo de Tenerife in a press conference attended by the Minister of Employment and Education, Efraín Medina, the illustrator Aarón Morales Pérez, and the representative of the Traditional Clothing Sectorial Council of Tenerife, Dulce Rodríguez de la Rosa.

Efraín Medina highlighted the significance of the book and the efforts made to “promote Canarian content in the educational sector. We are committed to ensuring that Canarian culture is integrated into educational institutions through resources like traditional clothing.”

Dulce Rodríguez de la Rosa described how the publication includes educational materials developed by the Tenerife Traditional Clothing Sector Council across six chapters.

Aaron Morales Perez explained that the book’s design aimed to replicate the look of an old photo album, blending illustrations with photos that appear as if they are pasted onto the pages. The pages feature decorated capital letters at the beginning of each topic, adorned with montages of photos showcasing the fabrics, prints, and stripes typical of the traditional clothing from the eight islands.

The page embellishments mirror the designs found in the various embroideries on petticoats, doublets, and waistcoats of different garments. Additionally, infographics are included to enhance comprehension, and the book incorporates an interactive section accessible via a QR code, providing access to educational materials prepared by the Traditional Clothing Sectorial Council of Tenerife.

During the book presentation, there was a display of traditional clothing examples from La Gomera, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Lanzarote, and Tenerife, modelled by members of the Guarache Folklore and Cultural Group.
