La Laguna celebrated Dog Day this Sunday with various activities for the whole family and in support of animal shelters. It was a fantastic gathering for dogs, owners, and families, all focused on promoting the care and responsible ownership of pets.
The festivities took place in the Plaza del Cristo and at the Camino Largo Castle, offering a range of activities for families to enjoy with their pets. Over five hundred people attended, engaging in storytelling workshops, face painting, crafts, children’s games, and raffles. There was also a charity dog parade, a specially prepared photocall for photos, and information points staffed by animal care experts to address any queries regarding pet well-being.
During the event, a solidarity collection of food and supplies was carried out for local shelters, which play a vital role in protecting and caring for abandoned or at-risk animals, despite facing significant challenges in meeting their basic needs. Domingo Galván, the Councillor for Animal Welfare of the La Laguna City Council, commended the citizens’ involvement and participation in this collection, highlighting it as a display of the solidarity and commitment that characterises the La Laguna community.
Galván described the day as “an opportunity to learn, have fun, and, most importantly, assist those in need.” Fran Hernández, the Councillor for Citizen Participation and Municipal Services, emphasised the event’s role in bringing the community together for a shared cause of promoting animal welfare. He underscored its significance not only as a recreational activity but also as a movement to raise awareness and demonstrate the community’s respect for animals.
Hernández expressed that involving the entire family, particularly children, in such events is crucial for building a more empathetic and responsible society. It helps raise awareness and instil values that are intended to endure for generations to come.
