SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tenerife Island Committee of the Labour Party has unanimously endorsed ten resolutions aimed at tackling the lack of affordable housing. They suggest the establishment of an island park to cater to the over 13,000 applicants on the island. This would involve acquiring land and purchasing partially constructed buildings, along with providing technical assistance to local councils.

Furthermore, the Labour Party calls on the Government of the Canary Islands to enable the designation of areas experiencing housing pressures, in order to monitor rent escalation.

On the topic of agriculture, the Island Committee has backed the request for the Tenerife Island Council to fulfil the measures stemming from the water emergency declaration, including the prompt deployment of measures such as deploying portable desalination plants.

Regarding gender equality policies, they advocate for the establishment of a dedicated unit to address cyber violence against women, with young women being the primary victims. In terms of social support, they propose the implementation of a special scheme for carers of dependent individuals and the establishment of specific facilities for individuals with Alzheimer’s.

Concerning tourism and the preservation of protected zones, the Labour Party in Tenerife supports the enforcement of a “genuine” eco-levy, applicable to all non-resident tourists in the Canary Islands for overnight stays. The revenue collected would have a specific allocation, whether for social or environmental purposes. Additionally, resolutions endorsing improved mobility in the Anaga Rural Park and a scheme to create caravan areas at various locations across the island have been approved.

The Secretary General of the Labour Party in Tenerife, Pedro Martín, elaborated that these are the key issues that the party views as priorities for the island. They have already influenced and will continue to influence the political course of the party in the months ahead.
