Yesterday, a street in El Sauzal was renamed Andrés Baute Fernández Street in honour of a well-known and proactive individual in the municipality. The touching ceremony, which involved renaming Mercado Street, featured a performance by saxophonist Wladimir Ariosa.
Regina Baute, the honoree’s daughter, was in attendance along with El Sauzal’s mayor, Mariano Pérez, and the city council’s general secretary, María Sánchez.
Also present were family members, including Paulino Rivero, the honoree’s grandson, a former president of the Government of the Canary Islands and current president of CD Tenerife. Rivero shared words, anecdotes, and memories of his grandfather with Andrés Baute, José Luis, and Andrés Rivero, who are also grandsons of the honoree.
Following the ceremony, a celebratory toast was held at La Pirámide.
Andres Baute Fernandez
Andrés Baute Fernández was born in El Sauzal on October 16, 1894, the only son of José Baute and Juana Fernández. He had two sisters, Francisca and Teodora. From a young age, Andrés faced the challenges of the time, working as a labourer with limited educational opportunities. After completing his military service, he married Ángela Dorta García, with whom he had nine children.
Between 1912 and 1916, they resided in Tacoronte in a modest house provided by the landowner. Despite living in Tacoronte, Andrés maintained his connections to El Sauzal, where he had inherited a parcel of land from his father.
In 1937, tragedy struck the Baute family with the death of their youngest son, Victor, in an accident. The compensation they received was used in 1941 to purchase a home in El Sauzal, enabling their return to the town in 1942.
Andrés continued working as a labourer in Tacoronte while supporting his family on the small plots of land adjacent to their new home. The passing of his wife, Angela, in 1944 deeply impacted the family, but they persevered. Andrés Baute passed away on October 14, 1974.
Today, Regina Baute, the sole surviving daughter, has generously donated a significant piece of land to the El Sauzal City Council, in honour of her father. This act ensures that the legacy of Andrés Baute Fernández, a humble and industrious farmer, lives on and is not forgotten.
